What Makes a Good Clay Cutter?

What Makes a Good Clay Cutter?

Sometimes, the smallest tool can decide how your whole piece turns out.

A clay cutter may look simple.
Just a shape. Just a tool. Just something you press into clay.

But if you are a maker, you know the truth.

A bad cutter can ruin a beautiful piece before it even begins.
Rough edges. Clay stuck inside. Uneven lines. Too much sanding. Details that do not come out clean. A design you were excited about suddenly becomes frustrating.

I understand that feeling deeply.

Before I started De90sCrafts, I was already in love with handmade earrings. I loved how a small piece of clay could become something personal, soft, beautiful, and full of character. But I also noticed something many makers struggled with — good clay cutters were not always easy to find.

Some cutters looked nice in photos, but when used on clay, the result was not clean. Some edges were too thick. Some details were too rough. Some left unwanted marks on the clay. Some made the maker spend extra time fixing, sanding, and cleaning the piece.

And I kept thinking:

A good cutter should make the making process easier, not harder.

That thought became one of the reasons I started designing my own tools.

I did not want to make ā€œjust another cutterā€

With my background in Automation Engineering and precise 3D modeling, I naturally pay attention to small details — measurement, structure, thickness, cutting angle, spacing, and how a tool actually works in real use.

To me, a cutter is not only about the outside shape.

It is about how the edge touches the clay.
How clean the cut comes out.
How easy the clay releases.
How much sanding is needed after baking.
How comfortable it feels for the maker using it again and again.

These are the details that may not be obvious at first glance, but makers can feel the difference when they use the tool.

A good cutter should save your time

When you are making clay earrings, every minute matters.

A clean cutter edge means less trimming.
A smooth release means less damage.
A sharp design means cleaner details.
A better structure means fewer failed pieces.

That is why I always try to improve my cutters with these things in mind:

Sharp cutter edge
For a cleaner outline and smoother clay cut.

Clean detailed design
So the pattern shows beautifully without looking bulky.

Less sanding
Because your time should be spent creating, not fixing rough edges.

Easy release
So your clay comes out more smoothly and keeps its shape.

Better side finish
To reduce unwanted marks and rough textures on the clay.

A good cutter does not just help you cut clay.
It helps you create with more confidence.

I test, adjust, and keep researching

Every De90sCrafts cutter starts with an idea, but it does not stop there.

I research.
I design.
I print.
I test.
I adjust.
Then I test again.

Sometimes a design looks beautiful on screen, but once it touches clay, I know it needs improvement. Maybe the detail is too thin. Maybe the edge needs to be sharper. Maybe the release space needs to be better. Maybe the cutter needs to feel stronger in the hand.

So I keep learning.

I keep researching because I know makers trust my tools for their own handmade work. Some of you are hobby makers. Some of you are small business owners. Some of you are creating late at night after work, after taking care of children, or between the little free moments in your day.

I know your time and effort matter.

That is why I want every cutter to be practical, clean, and useful — not just pretty in a photo.

Made with precision, but also with heart

De90sCrafts is built from both engineering and love for handmade creativity.

My technical background helps me design with precision.
My love for clay art helps me understand why the small details matter.
And as a mom of two, I understand how precious time can be.

When a tool helps you save time, reduce frustration, and enjoy your creative process more, that means a lot to me.

Because behind every handmade piece, there is a person trying their best.
A person with ideas.
A person with patience.
A person creating something meaningful with their own hands.

And I hope my tools can support that journey.

Why I keep improving De90sCrafts cutters

I know there is always room to improve.

That is why I continue to research different cutter structures, printing quality, edge design, and real maker feedback. I want De90sCrafts tools to be better, cleaner, and more helpful for the clay community.

Not because I want to make the most tools.

But because I want to make tools that makers will truly love using.

A good cutter should feel reliable.
A good cutter should make your work easier.
A good cutter should help your creativity come out cleaner and more beautifully.

That is what I will always keep working toward.

Thank you for supporting De90sCrafts and my small business. Every order, review, message, and photo means more than you know. Your support allows me to keep researching, testing, improving, and creating better tools for makers like you.

With love,
Jassie
